You can drink, you just can’t get caught.

When I was in grad school, I worked at Kinko’s (pretty good job, actually). There was a guy who worked the morning shift who always came in with breath reeking of alcohol. It was my understanding that he was just a few hours short of a PhD in mathematics, but spent his life drinking in the grad student pub. Thing is, he always came to work, he was always on time, and he would do any job, no matter how menial. When I became production manager, I came to rely on him to finish jobs that I ran. 500 booklets? Jim will do it. Bind 1,000 books? Jim will do it. Hand collate and hand staple 5,000 sheets? Jim will do it. He was happy to stay in the background and be busy. I’m sure that when FedEx took over the company he was the first to be let go. He’s probably on the street now, if he’s even still alive. Nice guy, though, and boy, did he know his math.

I worked with an alcoholic. The only time he didn’t shake was when he was sauced. He had the perfect job. We were studying the effects of alcohol in a rat model. That gave him access to a free supply of pharmaceutical grade ethanol. That’s 199 proof or 99.5% pure alcohol. I was young, so it took me a while to understand why the only thing in his office mini-fridge was Evian and limes
He died from alcohol poisoning during a weekend binge.

I had forgotten how much Jim shook while he was doing his work. He had a bit of difficulty putting together a sentence, too. But he was a good worker.

The guy I worked with was an electron microscopist. He had to catch 2-3 micron thick samples on a two millimeter disc held by forceps. Even when he was sober he could stop the shaking long enough to make the catch and deliver the sample to the drying rack. When he was drunk, it was all one smooth action without any shaking at all.
